Albert Nile – Murchison Falls Ecosystem

ARR-Project – Nwoya District in Uganda

A long-term Private Partnership with the owners of the properties in Uganda
as part of the PERFUTURO Forest Reserve Uganda Ltd.

Project objectives

  • Protect key endangered species such as rhinos, elephants, buffalos, Uganda kob, and lions by establishing a 50 km biodiversity corridor connecting Murchison Falls National Park, Ajai Wildlife Reserve, and East Madi Wildlife Reserve. This will enable safe wildlife migration and reduce human-wildlife conflict.

  • Sequester 1,000,000 tons of CO₂ over 35 years by restoring degraded land, contributing to both global and Uganda’s national climate goals through increased above- and below-ground carbon storage.

  • Increase household income by at least 50 % within 10 years for 4,700 inhabitants across the 10,000 hectares project area through income-generating activities such as forest products, fruit trees, beekeeping, ecotourism, biochar production, and access to the carbon market. The project will also strengthen the local community.

  • Scale up precision and transparency in tree and CO₂ data using TREEO technology, delivering the highest data quality while addressing current measurement and verification gaps

Long-term vision

In Uganda, the project aims to create long-term impact over 35 years in biodiversity, climate resilience, livelihoods, and the local economy. Initially covering 10,000 hectares, it seeks to engage more communities, government stakeholders, and civil society to scale up restoration efforts in the northern region to as much as 50,000 hectares.

Our Benefits

Economic

  • Job creation for 4,700 people and their families in a region where around 30 % live below the poverty line (total project area: 10,000 ha)

  • Provision of training in agroforestry and biochar to support food security and income diversification

Environmental

  • Promotion of sustainable land use and reforestation to drive carbon removal and enhance sequestration, supported by innovative dMRV tools for accurate tracking and certification

  • Protection and restoration of High Conservation Value (HCV) areas to preserve critical habitats and ecosystem services such as clean water, fertile soils, and biodiversity

  • Implementation of conservation measures to prevent biodiversity loss, exclude invasive species and GMOs, and ensure effective monitoring and mitigation

  • Ecosystem restoration to strengthen climate resilience and secure long-term environmental sustainability for nature and local communities

Social

  • Commitment to inclusive and equitable decision-making that involves all stakeholders and empowers vulnerable groups, especially women and youth (target: at least 40% women participation)

  • Promotion of gender-inclusive benefits and preservation of cultural heritage

  • Investment in long-term sustainability through environmental conservation and economic diversification

Sustainable Development Goals

In Uganda, we fulfil the following SDGs

The carbon validation and calculation is conducted according to the CSI Carbon Standard International requirements, verified by CERES and additional biodiversity certification and Socio Economic benefits reaching 11 SDG goals.
